Joe has been a resident of Medina County for 20 years. Joe, and his wife of 18 years Cecily, their dog Mr. Biscuits, and 2 cats Spooky and Una Lou live in Natalia TX.
A graduate of Holy Cross High School in San Antonio. Joe attended Palo Alto College, earned a degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and an MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Joe was the Democratic Nominee for State Representative HD 53 in 2020, 2022, and 2024. So why the shift to Senate District 24? Joe is running for the Senate Seat because he wants to honor the hard work of his grandparents, who have roots in the Poteet and Somerset Texas area. And 2 of his grandparents, Ricardo and Celia Alvarado, are buried near Rossville Texas, so this race is personal for him.
Joe's paternal grandfather and name sake Joe P. Herrera was a purple heart recipient, and Joe's father, Paz Ruben Herrera served in the Air Force Reserves. Joe understands what it means to be of service to others.
Joe has spent his professional career working for Food Manufactures, including The Hershey Company, Bimbo Bakeries, and Ferrara Candy. Working in the food industry and working with companies like HEB, allows him the opportunity to see the impacts of rising food cost and the impacts they have on Texas families. Regardless if you are in a small community or a big city, food pricing impacts everyone.
During his travels across the state Joe has seen just how resilient the folks of Texas can be, the local business owner, the 3rd generation farmer, the volunteer fire fighter. They are each doing their part. Don't they deserve a Senator that will put them first, and fight to make their lives just a little easier. Current state leadership is only focused on maintaining power. Joe is focused on your families future, and that starts with the 2026 election.
